This hilarious book has been compared to the writing of Erma Bombeck and written in a series of mini-essays by a woman who clearly feels confident, has a good sense of humour and “does not grow tomatoes and rarely sits in lawn chairs”.

You will read how she learnt to swim - only because her father threw her into deep water. When she came up shrieking and gaspimg for air he simply stood and said “good - she can swim”.

Also are the hilarious tales of her family, friends and people she just happened to know.

Discover how at 300 pounds, Peck became an international Goddess at her local gym.

The stories on “Babycakes” were superbly written and if you love cats you will enjoy them. However during my read of these sections I was in two minds about why the author makes such a big fuss out her cat liking string. Don’t all cats love to chase string? It just seemed strange to go on about this and in my opinion it didn’t make the reading as good as Peck might have intended.

However “Wreck the Balls on Boughs so Jolly” is a good chapter, especially with Christmas coming up and worth a read for a few giggles.

If that doesn’t suit you try “The Designated Fetcher” a chapter in which Peck writes about how her father used to be the coolest person on earth. However when she grew up the author did not find this was the case and making small talk when she invites him over to her house is not easy. Now she calls him up and invites him over with the line “Dad my toilet doesn’t flush right - what time would you like dinner?”. At least that way there won’t be any awkward, silent moments between them. Of course there is more to this piece and if you read it the way Peck has written it, it sounds so much better then what I can convey in a review.

The humour inside this entertaining novel is that which Bill Bryson might envy. I read this in next to no time during a single evening. At the end I was quite exhausted - from sheer laughter. Even the front cover managed to make me laugh and will certainly cause you to pick it up and dive right in.

It’s thanks to Peck’s friends that this book is available. They encouraged her to write down her memoirs and I am so glad they did!
