This fantastic book begins in 2006.  A man by the name of John Finley wakes up inside his locked cabin located inside The China Sea.  As this captain walks through the boat, trying to figure out why everything is so quiet, he comes across the bloodied bodies of various members of his crew.  Behind him, a man with a gun appears and tries with everything he has to take out Finley, but misses his shot.  John Finley raises his gun and blows away the killer.  Taking a duffel bag from the hiding place inside the boat, he runs away and disappears into the night.  Rushing to his girlfriend’s house, the home of Sarah Woodruff, he stashes the bag right before the men who are following him step through the doorway, smash Sarah on the back of her skull, and disappear from the house.

Soon, Sarah Woodruff is arrested by an enemy that she’s made inside the police department.  Just as she is about to go to trial for the death of John Finley, a videotape appears that shows Mr. Finley is still very much alive and soon all charges against Sarah must be dropped.  Once again, months later, Finley’s body is found and Sarah is once again accused of murdering her lover; this time, much to Sarah’s dismay, a great deal of evidence is smothered by the federal government and Sarah is found guilty the second time around and thrown on to death row.  Soon, her case is sent to the Supreme Court trying to get an appeal.

Brad Miller works for the U.S. Supreme Court; he is the assistant to Justice Moss – a woman who works extremely hard and has to be rescued from being shot in an underground parking lot by an unknown attacker.  Brad turns to Dana Cutler – a woman who is a private investigator who solved one of the biggest crimes in the world in the book – Executive Decision – and brought down the President of the United States.  She soon delves into the case of Sarah Woodruff, trying with all her might to find out what happened on the small freighter docked in Shelby, Oregon called, The China Sea, that contained a dead crew and drugs, as well as how and why Sarah Woodruff was sentenced to death because of her involvement with a man who was found dead by the FBI.

Every red herring imaginable makes it almost impossible for the reader to put this book down.  Margolin has always had a gift where suspense is concerned, and this new offering is no different.  From the who to the what, where, when, and why – readers find themselves pulled into this amazing story that is made up of one heart-pounding scene after another.
