Talk about the perfect book for a
teenager to read over the summer…any teenager – no matter
what “in” or “out” click they happen to call family. In
this fantastic book we are introduced to Madeline. Madeline is
a young girl who has barely been noticed in her school “social”
world. But as soon as she finished eighth grade, she flew out
to spend the summer in Italy with her fantastically cool Aunt.
Coming back from the once-in-a-lifetime voyage, Madeline literally
walks through the doors of the high school as a “fierce”
freshman. She has the best hair, greatest clothes, and has
scored a popular boy who wants nothing more than to have her on his
arm. She is immediately accepted by “The Mosts.” This
is the IN group: Caro Alexander (Most Beautiful);
Fergie Ferragamo (Most Stylish); Annie Haywood (Most Hilarious); and,
Selena McFarland (Most Hot). And now…Madeline Echols is Most
Popular. Unfortunately, even with all the good things that are
happening in her life, she is about to lose the one thing that most
likely made her one of The Mosts to begin with…her boyfriend.
Her boyfriend is on his way to California – far from Madeline’s life in Maine. Her heart is completely breaking. How will she live without Thom? All she can think of is to save as much money as humanly possible and buy herself a plane ticket – move to California and live with her Dad so that she and Thom can always be together. But how is she going to find that kind of money? Her mother and her step-father own a farm in Maine, and there is literally no money to spare. Soon, Madeline finds a way to make a little cash. The people who appear on “The Nots” list – the poor geeks and nerds who don’t know how to dress or be cool in any way, shape, or form - need Madeline’s help. If she’ll teach them how to become members of the “cool” clique, they’ll pay her enough money to secure her plane ticket to sunny California.
What Madeline begins to realize is that “The Nots” are absolutely fantastic people. Not long ago, she was a ‘Not’ herself, and she soon finds herself doing everything she can to help the students become “accepted.” While working her magic to change their lives, Madeline soon sees that the ‘Most’ girls are really the Mean Girls…and she finds herself trying to figure out whether she really wants to be a part of such a cavalcade of jerks.
This is a fantastic story for any teenager who wants to fit in (let’s just say, every single one of us, because we’ve all been teased about something over our high-school lifetimes). The author makes fantastic points about being yourself versus fitting in with the crowd; and, how far a person will go to simply be admired and not really cared about by others. Melissa Senate is the author of eight other novels including a teen debut entitled, Theodora Twist, and she has – most definitely – found a new fan in me.
