I am generally a skeptic when it comes to reading a book that offers to help the reader find the best ways to accomplish a mission.  Usually, this is because a lot of those books give stale insight that the reader should already have the common sense to know.  It is rare to find a fresh and invigorating strategy book that engages, motivates and excites a reader.  However, Jay Block found the way to do just that in his book 101 Best Ways to Land a Job in Troubled Times.

I have recommended this book to so many people in my social circle already and can barely contain my excitement when I do so.  While many books give us only the ‘how’ when it comes to finding a job or starting a new career, Jay gives us the who, what, where, why and when as well.  Jay incorporates intelligent ways to delve deep into our ‘selves’ and find out who we really are. He provides exercises to help us find our signature values and our goals.  Jay helps us to articulate what we want in a job. Using his advice, we can find the kind of job that will be fulfilling and coincide with our core values.

Along with these important strategies, Jay also gives us the ‘how’.  Many of us know we should be more authentic or in touch with ourselves.  We know the light bulb should come on, we should have an ‘aha’ moment or a ‘grab the big brass ring’ opportunity but then those thoughts often slip away. Because, in all actuality, many of us do not know how to get the things we want for ourselves especially when it comes to a career.  Fortunately, Jay lays it out for us clearly and strategically.  For example, we are told not only to update our resumes with rich keywords but we are told (and shown how) to build a whole marketing plan for ourselves.

This book is rich with advice and inspiration from Jay’s own career experience that brought him to where he is today.  Each chapter ends with a summary of the steps he discussed in detail throughout the chapters which provides an easy reference for the readers.  The exercises are clearly designed and the instructions are simple.  Jay even guides us in the importance of spending ample time determining our focus at the beginning of the job search and stresses that we should spend quality time answering questions and working on the exercises so we can identify the most satisfying career.

I highly recommend this compelling and engaging book to anyone in career transition.  Even if you aren’t looking for a job at this moment, take the time to read Jay’s advice and work on the exercises provided in the book.   That way, if you ever find yourself on the receiving end of a pink slip or decide it is time to take back the reigns of your career, you’ll be ready!
