At one point in everyone’s past (except for the natives of this fantastic country of ours) an ancestor braved the rough seas to dock in front of Lady Liberty and start a brand new life. There were many trials and tribulations to face as people stepped onto Ellis Island. And now, there seems to be another set of problems thousands of miles away from that first location of freedom. This well-written book documents a very specific immigration problem that’s happening in our country today.
Danika Morales has sworn to protect the U.S. Border. She took an oath to do just that, and is learning every day that there are much deeper and more problematic rivers to cross than the Rio Grande.
As we begin, we are introduced to the fact that Danika lost her beloved husband, Toby. As she faces the second anniversary of her husband’s death, she tries to come to grips with why God took him from her and their wonderful little girl, Tiana. Danika is a straight-laced border guard who takes her job very seriously. She wants people to enter the U.S. so that they can gain freedom, a job, and a sense of betterment for themselves and their families. What Danika doesn’t want are the people who are racing into her country with the intent of selling drugs, or worse – young women.
Danika also has a brother-in-law named Jacob. Jacob is filled to the brim with anger and resentment since his brother’s life was taken. He has a wife and children who he continuously and unmercifully yells at, and his boss wants him to take anger management classes or leave the force once and for all. When Jacob’s daughter is kidnapped, he receives a phone call from a man who wants a list of all the sectors that signal the border patrol. The evil kidnappers want to be able to enter the U.S. without anyone being the wiser.
Dr. Alex Price works at a local hospital. He administers medical care to people who have made their way across the border, and is horrified at the young woman who has come under his care that has been brutally beaten. Not only has she been harmed, but she can also tell a story about a crime that is going to be committed. She could tell…but not before she is found dead in her hospital bed.
The author supplies us with an abundance of characters and storylines that interweave extremely well. Not only is Danika trying to raise her hearing-impaired daughter by herself, she also has help from a nanny who is truly a god send. Although, if Danika knew she was actually in the country illegally, their friendship would most likely disappear in a heartbeat. Jacob and his twisted issues are also extremely riveting, leading to a secret that includes Danika’s husband. What’s true and what’s not? There are so many questions swirling around Danika that it’s extremely lovely that the storyline between her and Dr. Price was there to offset the rest of the drama.
This is a good story, but it also looks into the raw emotions that come from politics and policies. The issues of border guards, immigration – legal and illegal citizenship – certainly appear in today’s headlines, and the author does well to “see” every side of this highly-debated issue.
