Today, Norm Goldman Publisher & Editor of Bookpleasures.com is pleased to have as our guest David Charles author of Think For Yourself: The Importance of Maintaining Individuality and Freedom of Thought

Good day David and thanks for participating in our interview

Norm:

How did you decide you were ready to write Think For Yourself: The Importance of Maintaining Individuality and Freedom of Thought? As a follow up, where do you get your information or ideas for your book?  What are your hopes for this book?

David:

Hello Norm. Thank you for the welcome. Several factors were involved in the timing for the release of this book. I had been planning this writing project for several years and was always gathering information and posting ideas into the outline knowing that one day I would ultimately compile all of my notes and complete the book.

What triggered the action was something that I read by a very famous businessman. He put it quite frankly when he said; “Twenty percent of your priorities will yield for you eighty percent of your productivity. If you have something important to do, then get to it”. His advice was right on target and with that I decided to move forward and finish the project. I was also fortunate at the time that my schedule allowed for me to focus on the creation of this book without being involved in a school project.

On information and ideas, I wanted to touch on subjects that I felt were universally important and would strike a chord with almost everyone. Anecdotes are relatively simple to come by. Almost anyone can relate stories such as I have done on any of the covered subject matter. This is real life experience being translated on paper. There was also a fair amount of old fashioned research to verify any historical or technical references. My hopes are that this book will be well received for its intended message, and that readers will be able to take away something practical and useful in their daily lives.

Norm:

What do you want your book to do? As a follow up, why do you think this is an important book at this time?

David:

The book should inspire the reader to ask questions, seek answers, and take action. The message is to be a participant in life and in all of the decisions that are required on a daily basis. Live in the moment. It is up to the individual to make his or her own way and take personal responsibility. I think this book is important now because so many of the covered topics seem to be taking a hit when it comes to freedom of choice. With so much propaganda on either side of a given issue, it is paramount that the individual stay involved in decision making process in order to make effective choices.

Norm:

What makes your book different than the thousands of other self-help books that cover the same themes?

David:

The book is a friendly reminder of why it is important to take charge of one’s own circumstances. It’s written from the perspective of an ordinary individual and is based on real life observations. There is not an abundance of technical or clinical language. It’s a down to earth look at key topics from everyday life that all of us can easily relate to.

Norm:

Do you worry about the human race?

David:

Do I have concerns? Yes. There is a lot of turmoil in the world today. Do I think that our challenges are insurmountable? No, I am an eternal optimist. I have faith in the ability of individuals to come together to seek common solutions for the challenges we are faced with, and am hopeful that common sense will ultimately prevail and priorities will be put in order. The question is; will each individual be willing to do his or her part to be the change that we want to see in the world? That’s where it all starts, with the individual.

Norm:

What challenges or obstacles did you encounter while writing your book? How did you overcome these challenges?

David:

It’s an interesting dynamic when you are merging anecdotes and observations, with inspiring and practical messages. The question becomes how to tell the story and draw the conclusion so the writing flows and it reads well. I guess it’s more of a style issue than a technical one. In each instance, I wanted to give the reader an illustration and provide a conclusion, and at the same time provoke thought and encourage the reader to draw his or her own conclusion. In the process some technicalities may have been stretched, however I felt that the point that the book is trying to make would supersede any minor technical glitches.

Norm:

Did you learn anything from writing your book and what was it?

David:

Yes. On a technical note, I learned a good deal about the publishing process and what it takes to create a book and bring it to market. The process also reinforced my belief in the ability to visualize a goal, set the process in motion, and achieve the desired result. It is very pleasing for me to be able to say I did that on this project.
