Jonathan sees the news report on television that a hurricane is coming to their town. He, his sister Mia and their parents work together preparing for the hurricane. The story takes the reader through this process, the storm, and the recovery after the storm.

The conversations in Time to Get Ready… A Hurricane is coming to Our Town! are very realistic and those between Jonathan and Mia sound exactly like this reviewer’s two grandchildren, four and seven years old.

The book is based on a wonderful concept; to help explain to young children the basics of preparing for a hurricane, being safe during the storm, and an idea of what some damage may be after the storm has passed. The language and wording was fairly easy for a seven year-old and opened lines of communication about hurricanes.

On the down side there were two issues with Time to Get Ready… A Hurricane is coming to Our Town! The first being this reviewer’s four-year-old grand-daughter thought the faces of the characters were scary and when she said that her older brother proceeded to make fun of mainly the noses – some of them look like they have three ends on their noses.

The second issue was after the storm and the family took time to repair the tree house before they called Grandma to let her know they were ok. A seven-year-old did not think that was very nice “Cause Grandma would’a been worried, wouldn’t ya Grandma?” and added, “They really should’ve called Grandma first then fix the tree house.”

Grandma liked the book and the idea behind it and would like to see what further books in the series cover. My grandson did read the book a second time and then proceeded to try figuring out how he could build a tree house like the one in the book. The four-year-old had no interest in the book after the first reading.
