Carol Bradley first became aware of puppy mills in the fall of 2002 when a couple subjected 180 Collies to a horrific ordeal leaving these poor animals cold, hungry and no doubt traumatised. This was an incident that went to trial, however, it took a long time before these people were brought to justice.

As a result of what she learnt, Bradley set about tracking down these puppy mills. Gradually, the idea of Saving Gracie began to take shape through Carol’s experiences and the finding of one special dog, Gracie.

The story is heart-wrenching and can only make you question mankind. What an awful life a dog has to live in a tiny cage with barely enough food or water! It is sickening, but something which this book has helped to bring to light. We learn the cruel ways in which dogs are treated by some breeders, who use them as products and forget these are beings who feel pain, fear and every other emotion that we humans are capable of feeling.

Bradley explains that sometimes a dog will be born in the same cage as she dies in. It broke my heart and I really struggled reading this book.

Gracie’s story appealed to me because for this dog there was a happy ending.  There were also happy endings for the rest of the rescue dogs who were seized from a puppy mill at Baltimore Pike and given a chance in life.  Read how these dogs were able to replace their fear of humans and turn it into trust.

When you see the pictures included in Saving Gracie of a certain puppy mill and their atrocious conditions, you wish that those responsible will be severely punished. You learn it is with much thanks that there are organizations out there that save these dogs and others from their horrible lives and give them hope of a better future.

To read tales of the dogs that found loving homes and swapped their tiny cages for plush carpets and cool grass beneath their feet is humbling. Nobody can read this incredible and empowering book without shedding a few tears and rejoicing that there are those who deeply care for the animals that walk this earth with us.

A wonderful story told with passion and understanding. Bradley has helped raise awareness of puppy mills and the inside abuse that is kept hidden from society. If those dogs could talk there is one word they’d definitely say to Bradley “thank-you.”
