Vampires throughout history were perceived as blood-drinking monsters who resided in the shadows of people’s darkest nightmare.
However, they have evolved over time and now in the modern day they scare us as much as a thrill and excite.
With the help of Corvis we are led into a world of fantasy, fiction and reality in the hope we can understand what “vampire” is.
Corvis offers the reader an introduction with details of his interest in the darker things of life. His interest in the supernatural grew as he did. He read books and watched films all the while feeding his need to learn as much as possible and to add to his ever-growing collection. Corvis studied Bram Stoker’s Dracula and later gave his oral book report on it for which he received an A.
Having such an interest and doing so well, Corvis was spurred on to learn as much as he could about all things supernatural. This book helps to show us just how fond of the dark side Corvis is.
During a conversation Corvis had with a young woman, Jessica Rose, she effortlessly managed, to sum up, what vampire is: “Vampires are a seduction of the mind, body and soul. They sexualize death in an aspect unlike any other. Their suave manner and dark ways, lure us to the heart of our very darkest desires.”
These creatures pierce not only our flesh with their fangs but our desire for them and the need to become what they are. They enter our dreams, our minds and our needs for that close but deadly intimacy which we chose to embrace. Dracula-type vampires are almost gone and in their place are the often drop-dead-gorgeous vamps who allow us to lust over them and to indulge in our most darkest fantasies.
To appreciate all views of the “vampire” we are required to look back in history and to expand our beliefs.
We are given a brief glimpse into the various vampires that the past centuries have had to offer. Dracula is of course mentioned but there are also reminiscing about other vampires and authors such as Anne Rice.
Young people will be able to relate to certain parts of this book and especially Corvis’s discussions about Twilight. Here we begin to understand that there are many different types of vampires. In the case of Edward Cullen, he is represented as a “vegetarian vampire” and also fits the perfect idea of what many young woman would like. As Corvis points out Edward combines a feeling of safety and also that of a danger aspect. The appeal with the Twilight books is perhaps the anti-sexuality of it. An almost rejection of sexual promiscuity, as Corvis explains.
Today’s obsession with vampires is born of the affection we have for a creature who makes not only the perfect lover, fulfilling our every desire, but also a creature who can love us so fiercely in ways a human simply cannot.
We also explore vampire “sexualis” and look at how sex, vampires and death are linked. All are discussed in a way which readers can understand.
Read about the cases of certain individuals who have taken things too far all in the name of vampirism. Alternatively, read about Peter Kurten, the Monster of Dusseldorf, who drank the blood of many of his victims because it excited him and aroused him in ways other things did not.
Toward the end of his book, there is a very useful appendices section containing listings of films, books and other media which readers may find interesting.
Corvis has served up another gem which, if you are interested in this sort of thing, will no doubt fascinate you. A very well-researched and put together book.
