From the depths of the secretive and mysterious world of gypsy culture comes the villain of a lifetime.

Janeal is a young woman who lost her mother and siblings in a tornado in Kansas.  She has come to live with her father who is the head of a gypsy community in New Mexico.  Janeal loves her father, but the last thing she wants is to become stuck in a culture that the rest of the world thinks is nothing more than a group of turban-wearing fortune-tellers; she wants to be taken seriously.

Janeal’s best friend is Katie – who doesn’t mind being seen as a carnival attraction.  Katie lives for the sense of family and community that her gypsy world provides.  Robert is a very mature nineteen-year-old man who is Janeal’s love interest.  He works for her father and, like Katie, believes that the gypsy ways are the only ways to live by.  Janeal wants so much more.  All she can think about is getting in a car and driving to the big city to live out the rest of her days in a world filled with excitement and...normal people.  Unfortunately, for Janeal, a strange and disarming man is watching her every move, waiting to change the course of her future.

One night, Janeal ventures out to a mesa overlooking the beautiful red rock of the New Mexican desert, where she runs directly into a man by the name of Salazar Sanso.  This man is absolutely mesmerizing, and pulls Janeal into a terrifying world that leaves her gypsy community burnt to the ground and Janeal, running for her life.

Various storylines make up this truly fantastic ride that Ted Dekker has put together with Erin Healy, and I honestly want to tell you every single one.  But I can't.  Giving away the spectacular ending that these writers have worked so hard to provide would be a tragedy.  Let me just say that, as the ashes of the gypsy community get cleared away, the reader finds themselves face to face with two other survivors besides Janeal.  Not only that, but Salazar Sanso has an agenda that is specifically targeted to make Janeal fall into his clutches.

Like any really great mystery, the characters and plots in this book interweave with each other, producing red herrings and back stories that lead readers away from the dunes of the Southwest; to Milan; to New York; to the inner-workings of the DEA; and, finally to a shelter buried in the woods that plays home to a woman with more scars on her soul than are burned into her flesh.

This supernatural novel will leave the reader breathless.  Mark my words, you’ll wish there were another hundred pages so that this fantastic ride would never end.
