Very good story in light of the upsets in the financial world this past year.

In the prologue, a 12-year-old boy by the name of Pietr Broknovich stands on the bank of a river and sees a small rock in the shallow water.  He bent over and picked it up and kept it all his life as if it had some magical power that would keep him safe.  He stayed, looking out at the river while polishing the rock when it came to him what he wanted to do in order to go back to his homeland (Poland). He decided to change his luck and apart from the rock that had no real control over him, he would be able to change his life for the better.  He stopped crying and smiled as he put the small rock into his pocket.  He knew now how to control his future.  And it was then that Pietr Broknovich became Peter Brock.

Peter Brock became a well known attorney.  He was a Rhodes Scholar, graduating from Oxford, then on to Dartmouth  with a degree in International Law and Finance.  Working in a New York law firm for a short time before becoming partners with a friend, Jack Morrison, opening their own firm specializing in International Law and Finance.  Many of his former firm's clients left to follow him and it was certainly not by accident that he chose Jack as a partner.  However, Peter had many secrets that were not shared with anyone.  One of the secrets was a safe that was concealed in his office where he piled thousands of dollars in cash that he was able to skim off the account of a very wealthy client.  Said client, James Campbell, who is an extremely rich diamond merchant who met Peter in a private club in Brussels.  Jim wanted to keep more of his wealth out the clutches of the tax man and meeting Peter was a real prize package.  Peter begins weaving a "Web of Deceit" by redirecting a large amount of Campbell's money to his own account.  When Peter needs a little assistance in this project he enlists the help of a strip club dancer who eventually becomes Campbell's wife and an airline flight attendant to carry diamonds to Europe.  If it looks like Campbell is in on this, he will not be able to complain.  Sounds like the perfect plan doesn't it.  Unfortunately, all good things eventually fall to ruin.  People that Peter thinks are too ignorant to figure this out all of a sudden become brilliant strategists.  Two people wind up dead and Peter becomes caught up in his own web.

There are many very strong characters in this story and you have to pay attention to remember who is who.  This is definitely a spider's web but the spider usually wins.  This time, maybe not!!  I highly recommend this book to mystery/thriller readers and also persons who enjoy a good puzzle.  Sadly, moving money around has become a real problem and it's too bad it can be done so easily.  Good luck to Ms. Cox and I am going out to find her first book A Little Bit of Larceny.  I'm sure it won't be a disappointment.
