With brutal honesty, Mika Brzezinski – co-host of MSNBC’s Morning Joe recounts how trying to be a career woman, a wife, and a mother - in essence having it all - almost ended in tragedy for her young family.

The memoir opens with a frazzled, emotional exhausted and physically depleted Brzezinski who through a misstep ends up falling down a flight of stairs while holding her infant daughter. She lands on top of her daughter at the bottom of the stairs seriously injuring the baby.

Recognizing the accident as the wake-up call that is was, Brzezinski tells how as a young television reporter career minded woman she had difficulty saying no to more and more job responsibility. In fact the more responsibility she got, the more recognition and prestige she got. She was young, unmarried; why not go for it all?

She met her husband at the television station and right on track according to her personal milestones, they got married and soon started a family.

However, being pregnant, having young children, hosting early morning shows, enduring long commutes and keeping up with a high-priced lifestyle eventually took its toll. It was the terrible accident that finally prompted Brzezinski to take a step back and begin to reprioritize her life. She ends up taking a break from her work resulting in her starting from the bottom once again when she reenters the field.

With candor, friendly language and a healthy dose of self-deprecation, we are led from an early creative and unconventional childhood to young independent working woman to becoming a young working mother. Brzezinski clearly shows us the places in her life where she erred in decision with the resulting consequences.

“This one doesn’t come from my mother, or grandmother, or any mentors I’ve collected on my journey, but from within. From me. A message I am still working to put in play before my children move into adulthood: pace yourself.”

A wonderful inside look at the television reporting industry as well as a valuable life story for moms who try to do it all, this memoir is certainly one from which to learn.

Mika Brzezinski is a co-host of Morning Joe, with Joe Scarborough, and an MSNBC new anchor. She is also co-host of The Joe Scarborough Show with Mika Brzezinski, a national radio program distributed by Citadel Media. She is the mother of two children and had been married for fifteen years to a journalist at ABC.
