This medical thriller is a heart-pounding page-turner that kept me in my seat until I finished the last page.

The Last Surgeon starts off with a gruesome and haunting crime designed to look like a suicide. A competent and emotionally stable nurse is forced to either kill herself or have her sister be killed. She chooses to end her own life. The dead woman’s sister: Gillian Coates doesn’t believe it was a suicide and sets out to prove it.

By doing this she sets things into motion that will involve her, an ex-Army trauma surgeon: Nick Garrity, homeless veterans, and one of the most ruthless killers you will ever meet in a novel.

The plot moves quickly with believable and snappy dialog. You find yourself compelled to care about the two protagonists who have inadvertently gotten themselves into so much danger. You will also, find yourself cringing at the truly inventive and chilling ways the killer goes about his business.

“So, what floor did Umberto go to after he was dropped off at Shelby Stone?”

“Well, that where it gets really interesting,” Mullender said.

“How so?”

“There are no other entries in his record.”

“Nothing?”

Not a word. According to all I’ve been able to find, Umberto Vasquez was delivered at Shelby Stone Memorial at ten o’clock that morning. Then he just disappeared from our records. It’s as if he simply dropped off the face of the earth.”

There’s plenty of action, plenty of time dependant decisions and there is even a computer whiz-kid who works on the side of good (while only breaking a few laws). Palmer, a physician himself, fills the book with enough medical facts and procedures to make even the most diehard ER fan happy.

The Last Surgeon is a thoroughly enjoyable and at times, painfully exciting read that will keep you guessing until its final breath-holding resolution.
