Almost everyone I know owns a cell phone….except for myself and probably the Amish. This form of communication has become an integral part of our society. Wireless technology is everywhere, which is why it is essential that the proper research on the safety of this technology be conducted and truthfully reported.

Dr. George Carlo, one of the authors of Cell Phones: Invisible Hazards in the Wireless Age, shares with us his dilemma concerning having been hired by The Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association ( CTIA) to test and report on the safety/dangers of cell phone use. When Carlo began to honestly report on his findings, the CTIA was not thrilled and tried to discredit Carlo’s research. It has always been difficult for me to understand why industries are allowed to research the safety of their own products. It seems like an obvious conflict of interest and that the results or conclusions can’t help but be biased. However, even government agencies, including our FDA, have failed to warn the public about the dangers of cell phone use.

Some of the findings of the scientific studies conducted by Carlo and others, showed that cell phone use can negatively affect pacemakers, disrupt the blood/brain barrier, cause genetic damage to the blood cells, cause tumors more frequently on the side of the head where the cell phone is used, and that cell phone radiation penetrates more deeply into the skulls of children than in adults. Carlo is quoted as saying….”We’ve got to keep these phones out of the hands of kids.”

“Cell Phones” was published in 2001 but is still very relevant today.  Just the other night my husband, who knew I was reviewing this book, called me quickly from the kitchen to watch the news. I couldn’t believe my ears… eight years later the media is still reporting to the nation that there has not been any evidence that would show  cell phones may be damaging to our health. At the end of the segment, the anchorman did add that if we were the type of person who worries more than others do…we may want to keep cell phones away from our children till they get a bit older. The seriousness of this issue was definitely downplayed. In fact, according to Carlo’s studies and the corroborating studies of others, which the CTIA and the FDA definitely are aware of, it is obvious that the public is being intentionally misled.

The information in this book is crucial for citizens to be aware of. It is written in novel form so it is geared more towards the person who wants the inside story, rather than for a reader who wants the facts short and sweet. Carlo details his interactions with the FDA and the CTIA and relays how he was caught in the middle. If a researcher is funded by the industry, whose products he is testing…then unfortunately the researcher’s livelihood may depend on the results he reports.

Not only is cell phone radiation a risk to the personal user but we are all exposed to the crisscrossing signals of this wireless technology. Our atmosphere is becoming permeated with many different frequencies. How are we ever going to determine the overall effects this can have on all life dwelling on this earth? We’re all in this together….even those who work for the FDA and the CTIA. Maybe it’s time we put money concerns aside and begin to consider the cold hard facts.
