A very enjoyable
treasure hunt. It will keep you on the edge of your chair until
either the treasure is found or all who are looking for it are no
longer able.
This book starts with the death of a person
named Padilla. He isn't the main point of the story but his
death sets three men free to set out to look for a treasure that was
buried 25 years in the past. On a beautiful day cruising the
Gulf of Mexico, two good friends Jeff and Chuck and David, a buddy of
Chuck's set out on a run to test the motors in a boat. While
out in the Gulf they come upon what they think is a deserted boat
floating in the water and when they check it out with binoculars find
that the deck is covered in blood. When they board to help they
find a man who has murdered two people and threatens to kill them
too. He is apparently a smuggler whose boss is a Mr. Padilla,
mentioned in the first line. Fortunately, they outwit their killer
and find hidden treasure that is worth more than they can
comprehend. However, Mr. Padilla stands in the way of them
cashing in their new found riches and they agree to keep it a secret
until they hear of Mr. Padilla's death.
An obituary
finally appears in the New York Times and they plan to claim what has
been buried for twenty-six years. But, in the meantime, another
man has found the map that was buried decades ago and pinpoints where
the treasure is and decides to go for the treasure himself. As
for the three originals two of them sincerely face up to the question
of how far they would go for the treasure and come to the conclusion
that they have enough and don't want to bother going for the treasure
so, it's down to David, who is unhappy in his home life and Patrick,
the man who found the map. And then the fun begins because
neither one of them will give up until the treasure is found.
This
is a read it all in one sitting book. I couldn't put it down
once I started. There are many wonderful details regarding the
Grand Canyon by an author who seems to know what he's talking about.
The story was definitely fun to read and the characters very real.
I recommend this to mystery/thriller readers and also you will like
the final characters. Patrick is a teacher and very likable
with a drinking problem, and David is someone that you would take an
immediate dislike to from the beginning. The author does a good
job of keeping your interest throughout the narrative and it never
bogs down. I genuinely liked this book and look forward to
another from Mr. Anderson.
