Pemba Sherpa is the beautiful story of a young brother and sister who find strength to do what must be done when it is most needed. The brother has always wanted to be a Sherpa guide who leads groups up Everest. To show he is worthy of being one, he fetches wood for the school’s fire, a three hour round trip early each morning before school starts.

His younger sister Yang Ki also wants to be a Sherpa but everyone knows that girls can’t be guides. In the story young Yang Ki with a singleness of focus follows through on her dream despite being told again and again that she can not and should not.

What results is a tender, timeless story of determination and ultimate success. It is also a touching story of a love and respect between a brother and sister existing despite what obstacles may occur.

The fact that the book is dedicated to Pemba Doma Sherpa, the first Nepali woman to summit Mount Everest via the North Face brings the story even more alive as we see that somehow, somewhere one little girl really did choose to follow her dream and with determination in the face of criticism succeeded.

The water color illustrations in this book are just as noteworthy as the lesson learned. Using subtle colors reminiscent of the region and incorporating clothing, plants, and even architecture from the Tibetan culture, the pictures enhance the simple beauty of the story.
