Didn’t See It Coming – How I faced bouncing off a Buick and other assorted stuff is not the not the book that Peggy Haymes had intended to write. The story begins with Haymes being hit by a car while making a left turn on her bike.

What follows is the candid and surprisingly at times humorous account of how Haymes works to recover from her thrice fractured pelvis. Her sense of optimism and gratitude reminds us that even in our darkest times, there is always hope.

Throughout the year of her recovery, Haymes who is a counselor herself learns valuable lessons like allowing others to help you and being grateful for the small things like being able to look outside her window at the outdoors even if she couldn’t be out there physically.

In her story we have a front row seat to the trials and tribulations Haymes faces during her projected 5 month recovery (which actually stretches out a bit longer and we hear her frustration about this).

With the help of her family, friends, community, and church she is able to gather strength from others when her personal strength seems to fail her. From having lost the ability to be mobile (she is confined to a wheel chair for several weeks following the accident) we watch her slowly gain her strength, confidence, and independence back.

Written in journal format, this engaging book not only takes you through the different stages of recovery but it also gives us a glimpse of how a person can endure even the hardest of times with faith, a good support system, and a positive attitude.

Haymes voice and sense of humor comes through so clearly that by the end of the book, you will have felt you met a good friend.

Peggy Haymes is a counselor, minister and writer, a popular speaker and retreat leader. The author of Heart Prayers and Be Thou Present, she is the former editor of Reflections Daily devotional guide.
