The authors of this book have contributed, written, and/or edited more than sixty books for educational publishers and are currently developing a series of videos for classroom use.  As a mom, I must say that I hope many more books from these authors will turn up in school curriculums, simply because many of our children need to learn about people other than themselves.  I think it would be wonderful to raise the next generation to be interested and excited about the numerous factions, races, faiths, and more, that make up our country.

This young adult book brings readers into the period of the late 1840’s America.  The conquest in Mexico has just happened and the War Between the States looms on the horizon.  The brutal hardships of slavery are advancing into the American Psyche, and the world is in a state of turmoil no matter where you look.  Even in Anna’s World.

Anna Coburn's father has lost it all:  the store, the money, everything.  He needs to be able to go out into the world and recover some semblance of life for himself and his daughter.  But he certainly can't drag poor Anna across the United States - living in rat-infested streets – while he tries to build a future for her.  So Anna's father decides to leave her with the Shakers in their strict community while he gets back on his feet.

Anna wants nothing more than to please her father and make sure he doesn’t worry about her.  So, even though she is not amused by the Shakers stern rules and strange way of life, Anna is willing to be “good” until her father comes to take her out of what, she feels, is a inescapable prison

The reader is brought into the world of the Shakers by this wonderful writing duo, who are authors who did their research extremely well.  From the rules and regulations of the community, to how they eat, dress, work, and congregate as human beings – the entire, almost still unknown Shaker world - seems to come to life before your eyes.  Mr. Henry David Thoreau comes to visit the community and tells a tale about one of the sisters that teach young Anna every day.  Sister Zenobia, long before she settled into the Shaker life, was a regular bohemian.  She loved to dance, play, experience life and even wrote very beautiful poetry which she shares with the students.  Anna begins to see her teacher in a whole new light, and is astounded by the beautiful words that the sister once wrote.  This is just one example of how Anna comes to view the Shaker world differently during her stay.  Throughout this story we follow Anna and watch her turn a life of boredom and loneliness into one of respect and admiration for the Shaker world.  It’s a lovely story for young adults who wish to see how "other people" live who don't have the need of iPod's and designer clothes.  Not to mention, after reading about the Shakers discipline, our own children’s “time-outs” won’t seem like such a bad thing at all.
