“I noticed Mr. Moloch, the marine man, sitting on a truck bumper, flanked by the fire-breathing Professor Cretorius and the sword-swallowing Salazar.” Honestly, how can you NOT love a line like that?
I’ve been lucky enough to have read three books by this talented writer duo, and it was no surprise that this one was as wonderful as all the rest. With this young adult gift, we are taken into the town of Buchanan, Kansas where a circus has magically appeared overnight on a barren field belonging to an unsuspecting town citizen.
Randy Carmichael is a young boy who lives in Buchanan and notices the circus setting up. He wants nothing more than to go over and see the “fun” up close. However, when his mother comes home from work, her face is positively white with fear. In addition, Randy notices his mother staring out over the field at the circus with sadness in her eyes. She expressly forbids Randy to go anywhere near that strange Big Top looming in the distance.
But then…the voices come. Strange godlike figures appear before Randy and soon the young boy finds himself walking down his driveway and into the strange group of circus folk. What is this dangerous quest that he finds himself on? And why is his mother so angry and upset about this particular circus? It is as if there is a history there that Randy will do absolutely anything to understand…and uncover the truth.
Readers, this is a wonderful book. Not only do we have exciting, fun characters like grizzly bears in tutus; a man who can sit underwater for hours on end who holds a mighty trident that can cause natural disasters; another man who can see the future creeping closer to everyone around him; and roustabouts who keep the circus up and running; but we also have a very powerful story mixed in, of a family who is struggling to right the past and restore their belief in each other.
I am a big fan of this trilogy already and can’t wait to read Part II. I am really looking forward to following the journey of this wand, “topped with a pinecone and wrapped with vine leaves and greenish-purple grapes.” In fact, my favorite part of this book came when young Randy is in school and goes down to help the drama teacher. He paints and does scenery work for the plays that the school puts on. Upon arrival in the theatre, the carrier of the strange wand is sitting in a chair. The thunder is echoing around him; his eyes flash with silver and his skin is pale, and he seems to know everything about the adventure that Randy is about to embark on. The imaginative descriptions in this book will appeal to people of all ages. And, believe me, after reading it, you’ll ALL want to run right out and join the circus.
