At some point in our lives, most of us will complain about neck pain. This may be acute and it only lasts a couple of hours to a few weeks, or it can be chronic lasting more than several weeks.  For the most part, the causes of neck pain are not too serious. A common cause of neck pain is a poor posture and today with more and more of us being slaves to our computers as we lean into them, it is a little wonder that we end up with neck pain.

Rick Olderman is a sports and orthopedic physical therapist, personal trainer and Pilates instructor. He specializes in treating people with chronic pain, addressing root causes of pain rather than the symptoms. He has put together a neat little book, Fixing You: Neck Pain & Headaches that he claims reflects a new perspective. After much practice and research concerning neck pain, Olderman realized that the basis of the problem generally resides in the shoulder caused by dysfunctional biomechanics that creates vulnerabilities. His finding was confirmed to him when he read Dr. Shirley A. Sahrmann, a physical therapist out of Washington University Diagnosis and Treatment of Movement Impairment Syndromes. Many of biomechanical paradigms and rehabilitative exercises contained in Olderman’s book have been adapted from Dr. Sahrmann’s textbook.

Three chapters and a conclusion make up this eighty-five-page gem of a book that is primarily geared toward the layperson and not medical professionals. Olderman informs us in his introduction that he has simplified and distilled his medical training to reflect the majority of problems he has found with treating his clients.

One of the problems with books of this nature is the lack of an accompanying CD or a link to Internet videos. However, such is not the case with this one, as Olderman has created videos of all the exercises and tests mentioned in the book on his website. In order to access these video clips, he provides you with a code at the end of the book. Trust me when I say, these videos are extremely important when trying to follow the exercises in the book. Another feature of the book’s presentation is that Olderman has bolded vocabulary words and added information boxes to help clarify words or concepts.

The opening chapter of the book deals with the visualization of the problem and the verbalization of your intention. There is no use purchasing this book if you do not intend to commit yourself to follow the exercises and techniques that are described therein. The second chapter deals with understanding your anatomy. As Olderman states, no matter how your neck pain crept into your life, the root in all likelihood has its roots in two basic problems: poor shoulder and poor neck function. In order to understand the problem, it is necessary to have some basic understanding of your anatomy. Consequently, Olderman presents in simple terms, devoid of medical jargon, brief explanations of the shoulder and neck mechanics. The third chapter of the book gets down to the “nitty gritty” of corrective exercises. These consist of the all-fours rocking stretch, neck extensor stretch, trapezius strengthening, arm slides and hands on head. There is also a brief summary of the most common errors. These are all well presented, however, again I must stress that it is essential that you follow these exercises in conjunction with the video clips, otherwise they are useless.

Readers can use this book in a variety of ways: you can dip into it to mine helpful exercises, or you can read it from cover- to- cover. However, in the end it is essential to understand that all of us have the ability to take control of our bodies and commit to the process of helping ourselves.
