The
setting for this novel is Munich, Germany 1940. In occupied
West Germany Horst Vogle, a former German soldier, is working as a
curator for the city's museum to accumulate lost art works that were
formerly in the collection.
In reality, Horst Vogle was
a member of the resistance in World War II. His real identity
is Jan Goldberg and he is an assassin with an Israeli death squad who
are killing former Nazis. Horst meets and falls in love with a
pianist, Greta Furster, who, in turn introduces him to some friends
who are war veterans trying to help German refugees who are fleeing
Communist Germany. In the process he discovers that they are
using Nazi gold and art works, including some of the art that was
formerly in the Munich museum to finance their work by supplying
Egypt with weapons to use against Israel. To Horst (Goldberg)
this cache of artifacts and gold were taken from Jewish victims and
he plans, along with his contacts in the resistance, to take these
treasures and gain some justice for the Holocaust. This raid is
carried out and Vogle finds himself tormented between his secrets and
his growing feelings for Greta. Relating what happens next will
spoil the ending for readers.
This book is a
thriller that will captivate all World War II fans as it is based in
fact and is an engrossing play on the Nazis in post war Germany.
Obviously there were many secret societies that continued to go on
after the fall of Nazi Germany. So much was going on behind the
scenes to keep the Reich going long after they were supposedly
beaten. Mr. Greene is right up there with John LeCarre for
must-read, edge of your chair excitement. This book has
everything a died in the wool spy fan will like including anger,
revenge, murder, art, intrigue, a million-dollar robbery and
romance. Who could ask for anything more? It grabs you
from the first to the last pages. I am on my way to the library
to pick up Mr. Greene's previous books. Have a good read.
