Daniel Martin has portrayed himself and his riveting tale in a painstakingly honest, yet beautiful way as he recounts his life as a young boy raised with an impeding fear of the devil, brimstone, demons, and government.

Growing up as a teenager, he turned to drugs as a way of escaping his Christian fundamental upbringing. I was able to relate to Daniel’s struggles as a young man torn between the two worlds. At times, it feels as if you are casting two shadows. One that is what your parents raised you to believe and the other- your own experiences.

Eventually, he was routinely committing burglaries to pay for his drug of choice-speed and this was was just the beginning.  Before he reached his 18th birthday, he became a ward of the state and soon thereafter, he found himself living out of a shopping cart, selling his body to purchase drugs.

Martin’s story is as much about the devastation of addiction as it is about homelessness. Here is a life that was a long, tortuous journey through treatment and rehabilitation centers where staying clean and sober was the only thing that truly mattered. Each success seemed doomed to a corresponding failure.

After many years of this extremely harsh lifestyle,  Daniel began to study plumbing and married a wonderful woman. They now have two adorable children, becoming successful parents and business owners.

I applaud Daniel in finding a way out of the horrendous lifestyle of drugs, the streets, and the greatest battle of all, himself. He began to form a life with positive changes and will power that bought Daniel to where his is today. I truly hope that many people will read this book and find a new positive path for themselves.
