Author:  Darlene Arden

ISBN:  0-7573-0544-X

This handy gem of a book is a must for all dog owners! Admit it, if you own dogs you have been faced with one of the following situations:

  • Rover humps guests the minute they walk in the door
  • Gives not so subtle ‘love bites’
  • Doesn’t get along with other dogs, thinks he is Top Dog
  • Has selective hearing
  • Has a flatulence problem
  • Pees whenever a guest makes it past the front door
  • Throws up on your guest’s leg at dinner parties

If you are a dog owner and a dog lover, you might think if your hound is guilty of just one (or several?) or the above infractions that is “cute” and that they are “just being a dog,” think again! Let’s face it, most dogs and dog owners can use Petiquette!

Author Darlene Arden is a well-known dog trainer as well as a long time dog author. Although she specializes in behavior problems for small dogs 20 pounds and under, she works with dogs and dog owners of all shapes and sizes.

Author Arden writes this book based on her experience in the field. As a behavior specialist, she has fielded every pet etiquette problem you can possibly imagine. Even better, in her book, Arden includes real life scenarios, as well as recommendations that readers can relate to--

We had invited our new neighbor over to watch a movie.

It was just my husband, our neighbor, as well as our

Doberman, Sigmund. At one point I noticed our neighbor

had tears in her eyes, which I thought was odd due to

the fact that we were watching a comedy. Later she was

fanning herself and I asked if she was hot. She finally said

rather embarrassed, ‘I think your dog has some gas.’

Not only does Arden reply to this very common dog owner’s problem with humor and excellent advice, (“First lighten up. Dog owners will understand, and non-doggy people will understand when you explain that dogs, like people, can have gas for a variety of reasons.”), she offers concrete steps to take to eliminate the problem in the first place (gulping air? Divide her food into two smaller meals. Or don’t let your dog exercise after eating, this can give your dog gastric torsion. Possibly the food itself, check the label, ask the vet and switch to a balanced diet).

If you are in need of some old-fashioned pet etiquette, or just need a little canine humor relief; do yourself a favor, rather than suffering in silence, buy this book!
