Any parent who has tried to help a child deal with the death of a friend, a beloved family member or a family pet understands the difficulty a child has comprehending such a loss.  After the death of his grandfather, Michael Tate’s parents are trying their best to help him cope but Michael refuses to face the reality of the loss. In his grief, Michael creates a vivid fantasy world in which his grandfather lives in his closet and a potato can grow in to a baby brother. The twist is Michael believes so strongly that his imaginings become real.

Michael and his sister make a magic formula that brings a special potato to life but a few things go wrong in the process. Tato comes to life as part potato and part human child.  But along with Tato a few other ordinary objects come to life as well.  Michael’s wish come true turns in to a dangerous adventure that threatens what Michael treasures most, his family.

In the touching story of Tato, retired elementary school teacher Kathe Gogolewski creates a fantastic world where courage gives a little boy the power overcome the obstacles he faces to rescue his family. Michael learns that love never ends even after the ones we love have died. Tato is a wonderful fantasy adventure for middle grade readers. Tato is a fun read and an excellent teaching resource for parents and children to read together and discuss.
