Author: Tamera Alexander

ISBN: 978-0-7642-0389-3

The Battle of Franklin that occured on November 30th 1864 in the Colorado territory is often referred to as “The Gettysburg of the West.”  This is at the core of this romantic historical novel.

Tamera Alexander is successful in journeying back to the battle and to the immediate aftermath of this civil war torn era and area.

Her characters are drawn with such reality that it breaks your heart to finish reading this entrancing page- turner. The era and sceneries she describes seem so genuine.

Elizabeth Garrett Westbrook, a handsome lady of thirty-two, daughter of a prominent Washington Senator wears clothes that fit the era, complete with a corset and a reticule.

She arrives in Timber City, a quaint little community, under the pretext that photography is her hobby when in reality she is working for a big newspaper back home, as well as for a land developer, who wants to build a hotel in the virgin and pristine territory of the Rocky Mountains.

Elizabeth accidentally bumps into Daniel Ranslett, a sharpshooter for the Southern Army,  who shoots the elk she was about to photograph.  The attraction between Elizabeth and Daniel begins to immediately take shape.

Her  helper, Josiah Birch, a recently freed slave, helps her haul all her photographic equipment from site to site. This character becomes more and more endearing as we follow his tracks beside Elizabeth, and we uncover his life story.

During one of their photographic expeditions, they encounter a dead body. However, they leave the body alone while they search for another site to photograph. Upon their return, the body has disappeared and racism raises its ugly head.

The author is very successful in building up the suspense as to who done it.

Many passages “From a distance” tug at your heartstrings. Alexander conveys the beauty and dangers of the Rocky Mountains and the wisdom of the Ute Natives with a lot of care and acuity.

This real page- turner will make you appreciate how easy it is today to take pictures with our digital cameras, without having to lug all the equipment and the dangers of the chemicals used to develop daguerreotypes.

Will romance blossom for Elizabeth and Daniel? How about Josiah?  Read on….
