From the rolling hills of Yorkshire and the barges of Hebden Bridge to the forests of Northumberland, this is a book that every walker will treasure. Away from the city crowds, this pocket-sized book introduces you to some excellent back-packing routes. They will take you into forgotten corners of Northern England or into places you always intended to explore.

Hills and mountain routes are described in such a way you will want to get your rucksack out immediately. The trails are accompanied by breath-taking photographs and excellent sketch-maps to follow but always remember to take your own Ordnance Survey map.

Many of the walks are within an hours drive from a town. People go just to walk and enjoy the scenery and magnificent views but some also go to climb the hills. Bird watching areas are popular too. There are forests to explore, rivers to fish or canoe in and you can take a tent which is one of the best ways to explore and spend a night or two under the stars.

There are walks included for the expert walker and walks for beginners if you just fancy a short trail. Each trail is set out in a very simple and straight forward manner. Beginning with a fact file and walk summary giving details of where to start, number of days to complete, distance and where to stay over-night. Equipment and safety is also discussed at great length. The book even discusses which food is best for your energy levels.

I thought the Wainhope and the Kielder Forest sounded interesting, a gentle three-day walk through the forest. All kinds of terrain is covered from moorland to lake side as well as the beautiful forests.

Back O’Skiddaw from  Threlkeld is as far away from it all as you can get in the Lake District. You can climb Skiddaw or just walk the fells.

The Bronte moors are in the South Pennines an d Hebden Bridge is a good starting point. The terrain is quite bleak and atmospheric up to Top Withins. There is plenty of accommodation in Hebden Bridge and a good selection of cafés.

A Round Upper Wharfedale begins in Kettlewell village and then the scenery changes as you climb higher around the valley. You reach the heights of Buckden Pike and down the decent to Buckden village. Follow the tumbling waters of the Wharfe upto Arncliffe then back to Kettlewell.

There are many and varied walks in this complete backpacker’s manual. It is a must for anyone who loves walking, climbing and the great outdoors of Northern England.
