This is essentially and ultimately a woman’s book. However, it can provide comfort and humor to the male spouse whose wife is going through woman’s dreaded mid-life crisis.
It is the story, comedically told, of a lady from a small Indiana town and her attempts to deal with the hot flashes, paranoia, and jealousy that her hormones have given her. The first person descriptions of what her mind is thinking as she dialogues with those around her, including a pee prone Chihuahua, is what is funny. Oftentimes, it is sarcastic. She is a nice God fearing lady, even through her many quirks.
There is much family stuff and bantering between friends. Her quest is to find meaning out of aging and to overcome the increasing decrepitude. She is the victim (that’s hw the menopause has transformed her) of an empty nest, a friend who is having too much fun dating, and a husband who works too much and is around a flock of beauties. She is unsure of his faithfulness.
She grouses to herself and commits to overcoming the “curse” and is finally victorious. It is a wonderful story, even though the theme does start to get tedious near the end. It’s a cute, pleasant book—a pause from the prevalent action/suspense genre.
