Supply Chain Excellence is a 277 page, hardbound book, and comes with a ProcessWizard CD-ROM containing SCOR (Supply Chain Operations Reference) 8.0.  The book retails for $39.95 (US) and is organized in four Phases.  Phase I (discover the opportunity) and chapter 3 follows the preface, introduction, and acknowledgments sections and chapters 1 and 2.  Phase II (analyze basis of competition) includes chapter 4 through 6.  Phase III (design material flow) includes chapters 7 through 13.  Phase IV (work and information flow analysis and design) is covered in chapters 14 through 20, and is followed by an index.

This is the second edition of a 2003 version of the book.  The first edition was developed over the course of approximately 30 projects.  This second edition reflects the experience gained from more than 30 additional projects, seamlessly integrating Lean Six Sigma and Continuous Improvement into the process (p. xi).  This book is designed to assist you in redesigning your Value Chain in 17 weeks (p. xii).

This book provides detailed instructions and useful figures and graphics to assist you in applying techniques likely to improve the operations for your organization.  The illustrations are step-by-step or week-by-week, where Chapter 3 begins with Week 1 and Chapter 19 concludes the seventeenth week in the process.  Chapter 20 deals with the extension of excellence beyond the supply chain, though earlier chapters have already dealt with scorecards (e.g., the Balanced Scorecard (BSc)) and benchmarking, both of which represent extensions of the adoption of “best practices,” total quality management (TQM) and continuous improvement techniques.

This book is likely to be of greatest interest to those interested in all aspects of business, as the supply chain represents just that.  From the innovative design of a product to the purchase of raw materials, followed by adding value through the good or service completion or finished good process and sale, and concluding with an examination of consumer satisfaction measures to improve the process, the supply chain is, quite simply, the entire business process.  A topic likely to be of greatest interest to the generalist or the strategist, this topic has been sizzling hot for a decade and is not likely to go away.  If you are in business or interested in business, read this book or one like it.  I found Supply Chain Excellence to be extremely well-written, well-organized, rich with content, and a book that I will retain in my permanent library.
