A Concise Guide to Macro Economics is a 189 page, hardbound book, retailing for $24.95 (US).  Seven chapters, organized into 2 parts or sections, this book includes acknowledgments, introduction, glossary, notes, index and author biography sections.  I found it particularly interesting that this book began “as a note on macroeconomics” (see Acknowledgments section, on p. ix).

Having taught approximately thirteen sections of introductory micro and macro economics, over the years, this is a topic that interests me and, in my humble opinion, should be of interest, to varying degrees, to all.  The past few years, for example, have been particularly interesting.  The decline in the U.S. dollar, the sub-prime mortgage crisis, which has extended to non-U.S. markets in a very recent global “correction,” recent fiscal stimulus packages, rising (and falling) commodity prices, and the extended U.S. housing slump (and market-specific housing market foreclosures) makes macro economics a likely candidate for study by any concerned citizen – not just in the U.S., but worldwide.  Having said this, I would characterize this book as a wonderful primer for the non-business graduate.  It is designed for those who have not taken, for example, an introductory course in macro economics.  If you have already had coursework in introductory-level macro economics, you are not likely to benefit from this book or find it of interest.

If you are interested in beginning your journey toward a greater understanding of the above topics and other macro economics-related matters, I would recommend this book as an excellent “first step.”  It is, however, only that – a first step.  The writing style is very palatable and there are no equations or formulas to memorize.  Representing a light, weekend read, even for the neophyte, this book is likely to assist the reader in taking additional steps and actions to increase their understanding of economic matters – matters that are likely to affect and impact all.
