The book promised to "improve your memory, mood, and confidence throughout life." To say the least, I was skeptical. I have read so many "improve" books that I figured this would be one more of the same. I was wrong!
First off, I learned about "memory." There is short-term, long-term, and remote memory. There are certain areas of the brain involved with memory. Then -- I learned about memory under a microscope. I am not a scientist, but this was the easiest to understand science I could have ever imagined. In fact, I now have an answer when I make a mistake in my checkbook -- it is due to inadequate neuronal development in the left parietal lobe!
Next, I learned about the "changes in memory across the adult life span." I know, as I grow older, I find myself losing things, unable to recall things, but most of all I forget names. Little did I know that it has a name -- "Age-associated Memory Impairment."
And, there's even a short test where I can see if I am normal for my age group. The book even let's me know when I should worry about my inability to recall things.
There are "causes of memory problems at any age." Sleep apnea, drugs, stress and health problems may be a cause for memory problems. But, Dr. Crook offers "techniques for improving your memory." I learned that it's okay not to remember everything -- "unless you want to make a career of Trivial Pursuit." Negative memories are oftentimes difficult to forget. However, there are simple steps to "eject it from your mind as if it were a DVD." To recall, there is "association," and visualization. There are also "drugs and dietary supplements to improve memory." Dr. Crook devotes a whole chapter that informs us about the history and what is available.
Improving our moods and sleeping issues are next. There are cases (Elizabeth, Vincent, and Barbara) used to help us understand how negative thoughts, depression, and selective recall can play out -- sometimes keeping us from leading happy, productive lives.
In the back of the book is a handy glossary that easily explains what we need to know. And appendixes 1-5 are simple but revealing -- discussing everything from memory to healthy sleep habits. This is a book that needs to be on bookshelves in every home. If you aren't currently having memory problems -- you or someone you know are. This could even be used as a tool to take to your physician's office if you are having difficulties with memory.
