A simple children's book with unusual illustrations, Coca Finds a Shell is the story of a small girl who discovers an empty shell and wonders what creature can live in it. She then searches to find an inhabitant until a crab comes to use it as a home. It is a story for very young children to be read and explored with their parent or guardian.
Although the sentiment is touching and the author clearly wants to depict a tale of a child's awe with nature, this book does not build any suspense or hold any surprises for the young reader. It is a very easily read and over with in minutes.
The artwork is the focal point of the book, rather than the story, and according to the author, was painted whilst on holiday in Mallorca. A child will either love the pictures or be frightened to death! A pleasant use of colours - oranges, browns, rusts, and reds - but the portrayal of Coca, with her round, ball shaped body and small feet (apparently without legs), appeared a little strange, and scary - though I'm sure this was not the intention! However, my twelve year old son said he quite liked the art, so it's a matter of taste.
It is clear that the author cares about his work and has put effort into this book; it reflects his feelings of respect for nature and his enjoyment of a child's world. There is a sense of the message he is conveying.
