Pirates aren't exactly the symbolic project you might lean toward in a children's Christmas story, but Philip Yates makes it work. It's joyful, it's funny, it's surprising, it's colorful, and it's just loads of fun.
Yates usurps the classic A Night Before Christmas to share what Christmas might be like on a pirate ship. The ship's mate watches from the crow's nest while the rest of the crew sleep. When "out in the mist there arose such a racket…" he's fast on the attack. Instead of an enemy, he finds Sir Peg (Santa Clause). To say anymore gives too much away.
The poem is spectacular with its pirate vernacular and it all fits perfectly. You won't stumble over any awkward or forced moments. It works.
Sebastia' Serra's illustrations are busy and colorful. Pay close attention to all the detail. You'll see new things each time you read this one. It's a yo ho ho-jolly and unique Christmas tale.

Christmas Turtles
Author: Sara Ann DensonIllustrated by Tara McMillenISBN: 0-9769017-6-5 Lucky is the child whose grandmother loves them. That’s the message in Sara Denson’s book of grandmotherly love and family traditions. Both come across well in a simple story about Christmas candy. Grandma does everything (don’t they all?) from gathering the pecans in the fall to making and wrapping the delicious candies, which seem to magically appear each Christmas. To hear Grandma tell it, el
