Primarily a playwright, Jeremy McGuire’s O’Shaughnessey, A boy and his Leprechaun is his first venture into the worldof narrative fiction.
Intended for readers aged 8 – 14, I found this short book a fast read, scary, spooky but certainly interesting and a page turner par excellence. As the author states in his Introduction, “O’Shaughnessey is meant to be read out loud.”
Before our wired world, there was the shenache (SHEN-ah-kee) or storyteller:
“This gnarled and ancient dream-weaver earned his bread and bed by traveling the Irish countryside spinning tales in family cottages.”
The storyteller interjections throughout the book are very intelligent and comforting. I can envisage this mesmerizing yarn being narrated by the fireside on a cold, frosty evening, with the wind howling outside. I would also recommend that O’Shaughnessy be adapted to a one-man stage show for the delight of young and old alike.
The characters are unreservedly believable and spring to life under the penmanship of Jeremy McGuire. Real people, as well as Leprechauns and Banshees and other fairies, dance in front of our very eyes. Moreover, the author delicately merges reality and fantasy to the amusement of readers and listeners.
Bobby Mahoney is a little boy of 7 whose little sister is very sick. As sibling rivalry would have it, he often wished that she would disappear from his life, but he is now sorry for such evil thoughts.Their parents are divorced and are constantly bickering.
One morning, the witty tiny O’Shaughnessy appears on his bed post sweep him away to the land of Leprechauns and to the Ban-Shees caves as well as the Mountain of Shadows where is kept the dreaded Deathcoach. It is here where Bobby must stop the Deathcoach fixed trajectory.
Follow Bobby in his thrilling journey to save his sister and his parents separation.
Author Jeremy McGuire is a master of suspense and will keep you on your toes until you know the “denouement”.
Jeremy McGuire is as well a very talented artist. His black and white drawings are very expressive and will enthrall young and old readers alike.
