Jan Cleere’s Amazing Girls of Arizona profiles women from America’s later pioneer era. It’s important to note, however, that the book is about amazing girls and not pioneers, it just so happens that many of those profiled lived during that time. Their common ground is that they all lived in Arizona.

Cleere provides a look at a life that most modern girls will never know. They worked hard and often died young, without notice or remembrance—not because they didn’t matter, but just because there were so many of them. The eleven girls in Cleere’s book managed to push the envelope of their world. They were determined young women who showed courage and ingenuity, often in the face of poverty and adversity.

Each chapter is a short story about a single girl. Sometimes their stories are courageous. Sometimes, they’re violent. Cleere stories share a bit of history, geography, indigenous peoples, and of course, cultural morals and pitfalls.

The author tends to drift back and forth between a story and more traditional biographical format. I found the switches distracting, but I understand the difficulty of cramming a lot of information into a short story.
