I thought this book would be about making the transition from married to widowed. It was not. Instead, it was a fragmented recounting of one woman’s life for two years after the passing of her husband of 37-years.
The fragmentation is what I believe most interesting – because that is exactly how most people feel after a loss (unexpected or not). We seem to want to pay tribute to the person who has passed – Connolly has succeeded by this journaling of events and her personal thoughts. However, if you don’t know her husband or her family, you may find her snippets about news stories of interest.
There are two wonderful areas in this book – “We’re all winners,” and the simple steps to success.
“We’re All Winners” is a charming chapter about one child who sees reproduction for the very first time (the egg being head-butted by sperm). When one such sperm makes it through, the egg is fertilized and this produces a baby -- that, my friends, is way a child sees us all as winners. The egg and sperm were successful and produced us.
The ABC’s to success are simple: Accomplishment; Belief; Confidence; Desire; Effort and Enthusiasm; and Follow-through. These are helpful ideas to guide you in daily life -- ones I will hang on my wall lest I forget.
All in all, this is a simple light read of reflections, discoveries, and one family’s events.
