The most interesting about this and the other children’s books Ms. Berry writes is the way she found her calling. It seems her eight-year-old son was complaining about writing a paragraph and to prove that writing could be fun, she wrote a whole book for her son and his brother to read. Anyone with children will be thanking Ms. Berry for taking the time to write -- and her son for complaining about that paragraph.
The first page will capture a child’s attention – who doesn’t want to be a dragonfly instead of a kid taking a math test? But Spring break is in one week – better yet, the bell to set them free for the day is now!
Climbing into the van with their mother and sister, the boys want to know if there are family plans for the break. However, Mom said they would have to wait for that answer because it was a surprise – the boys are tormented the ride home having to wait for the answer.
The answer comes in the form of a guessing game. Mom has given the boys their clues – two syllables, the first rhymes with day and the second is what the boys would be when they grew up. They guessed it – Cayman. Their destination would be the Cayman Islands
Children never cease to amaze me. From the few disastrous minutes without a teacher in art class to the two mysterious packages that baffle even Mom, this book is always in full motion.
The Criminal in the Caymans is an adventure that two boys, Max and Sam, get caught up in on what is supposed to be a vacation – working for Dad and pleasure for Mom and the boys. From finding a watch buried in the sand to overhearing a conversation about America’s Most Wanted to learning that their lawyer father is really an F.B.I. agent in the Cayman Islands to capture a bad guy – the boys are up to their armpits in all of it.
This book makes for a good read for children. Along with geography and science, children will be able to relate to the characters – Sam and Max.
