Aidan of Oren, the third installment of Alan St. Jean’s fantasy series for young readers, continues the saga of young Aidan on the quest to find his father and take down the evil half-dragon, half-man who is his nemesis.
We follow Aidan and his small band of youthful followers on a series of adventures that entails encounters with vile creatures, revelations of ancient prophecies, and a course of events that tests Aidan’s faith in himself and his friends, even as he learns new truths about many of the people in his life, both good and bad.
Aidan’s journey culminates in his final showdown with his archenemy, Raven, also known as the black dragon. In the final pages of the book, we finally see who Raven’s true match, the white dragon, turns out to be and learn the final outcome of the massive war that has been brewing in the background of Aidan’s many trials.
Fans of the fantasy genre will enjoy this tale of trickery, with dream-scenes in which readers, like Aidan, are challenged to tell fact from fiction. Surprising plot shifts and sudden flashes of understanding about friends and foes that have followed Aidan throughout the trilogy keep the pages turning. And the sharp sarcasm of the cowardly but endearing parrot named Charles will, by this book, have become a favorite and beloved feature of the entire saga.
Although this tale presents few new themes to the children’s fantasy market, strong characters, witty dialogue, and fast-paced action make for the kind of fast-moving epic tale young fans of fantasy are always clamoring for. With the third book in this series, St. Jean makes his mark as a capable crafter of popular fantasy tales for imaginative kids.
