Papercutz has dipped into the classic comic vault and brought back the granddaddy of thrills and chills – Tales From the Crypt with the Crypt-Keeper, the Vault-Keeper, and the Old Witch. With the heavy hand of gore horror that has been extremely popular in the recent years, I find it refreshing to take steps back to the basics of horror, where if you do something evil to someone else, there will be retribution in kind. Reading these stories with the mindset of the 21st Century and the day to day sensory numbing or horror that entails, it’s almost hard to believe that these sorts of stories were seen as “contributing to delinquency of a minor.”

Each of the stories in this graphic novel all center around greed and what could happen when you go to far with it with a visual style to complement the lesson at hand.. In true Tales of the Crypt form, each story has a bookend of pun filled dark humor starring the “hosts” of the crypt.

In “Body of Work”, the greed of a neighbor’s success leads to a couple’s horrifying discovery of his inspiration for his “creepy outsider artwork. The next story, “For Serious Collector’s Only”, shows how far a middle-aged man’s greed for the ultimate action figure will take him. Then in “The Tenant” we learn that the greed and indifference a slumlord has will finally cause him to have to pay the price with his tenants. Finally, greed and arrogance have a stifling price to pay in “Runway Roadkill”.

For those of the younger set, or for those looking for the chills of a more innocent time, I recommend these Tales From the Crypt graphic novels from Papercutz. It’s a pretty quick read and will defiantly make you think twice before you give into your craving of greed.
