Author Robert Blake uses the Alaskan wilderness to share a story of love, endurance, and triumph over the seemingly impossible. Johnnie’s first bear-hunting adventure with his father in the Alaskan wilderness takes a fateful turn. Three days out, a grizzly mangles his father’s leg. His father can’t travel and Johnnie must go for help. His father tells him to keep his wits and listen to Swift, their dog. Johnnie’s first bear hunt becomes a rescue mission.

Alone in the wilderness, with just his dog Swift, Johnnie battles paralyzing fear, the elements, and yes... the grizzly shows up again. Giving up would mean certain death for Johnnie and his father. Swift leads the way and when Johnnie thinks that he can’t go on, Swift makes sure that he does.

Its a simple story really and one we’ve heard before, but Blake’s version is technically exquisite. If you want a real treat, read the story aloud to release the story’s rhythm. It isn’t poetry, but the story is alive with an unexpected pulse that keeps it real and intense. Blake’s oil illustrations are breathtaking in their simplicity. The bear’s frightening and the forest is deep and dark. An ice-covered pond's loneliness is as apparent as its danger.

Robert Blake has written and illustrated an intense story of trust and loyalty that children of all ages will enjoy and remember. His book is perfect.
