Author: Hodge Wood

ISBN: 978-0-9785158-6-7

Publisher: River Road Press

After Hodge Wood’s recovery from critical injury, he went on to practise occupational therapy for twenty years. Wood was later recognized as Oklahoma’s Occupational Therapist of the year in 1991.

Wood is an Officer on the Board of Directors of the Mid-America Chapter, Paralyzed Veterans of America. He has published articles which describe recreational sports aimed at helping those with disabilities. Hodge has lived on the lake with his wife Beth for twenty-seven years and their two boys, Cody and Dalton.

When a night out ends in tragedy, Hodge finds himself paralyzed due to a broken neck and is told by doctors he will never walk again. These words hit him hard, the doctors show little emotion as they tell Hodge his life will change forever.

Bed-ridden for months on end, Mr Wood tires to remain positive. He won’t allow himself to be a victim with this terrible fate that has befallen him, he will do anything to live life again as he used to.

Wood’s “guardian angel” arrives and introduces himself as Mike Kuns, his personal Physician Assistant. Mike promises Wood that he will do whatever it takes to help him reach full recovery. He provides Wood with honest answers but tells him that he is to have screws inserted into his head and that staff will place him in what’s known as a Stryker Frame.

Hope turns to sorrow during the weeks that follow. Wood feels completely useless strapped into a frame and soon bed sores begin to form. Nurses at the hospital are seemingly nice in the beginning, waiting on Hodge and even crying over deaths of other patients. However things take a nasty turn, and Hodge’s eyes are opened up to the shocking side of how cruel, mean and vicious these “nurses” can be.

It is truly shocking to read about some of Wood’s encounters with “Nurse Abuse” and it is appalling that in some hospitals, nurses that are trusted and relied on, can behave in such a hideous way. I just wonder why more nurses in the care system aren’t given the sack if they behave like that and maybe given a prison sentence.

Hodge’s positive attitude gave him the strength to fight on and after a speedy recovery from his accident, Hodge went on to become a member of Occupational Therapy. This gave him a boost and as Hodge says himself, it opened up a new chapter in his life. Helping the disabled was a rewarding and hugely enjoyable experience, especially as Wood could relate so well to what those disabled people were going through. It must have been a wonderful moment when Hodge was rewarded for his efforts and recognized as Oklahoma’s Occupational Therapist of the Year.

Hodge’s remarkable and astounding story just proves that anyone who is faced with such a terrible thing or becomes injured in other ways can change their lives for the better.

Maybe it was Wood’s faith in God that brought him through the worst times he endured or could it simply be the power of the mind? Whatever it was, this is one book sure to inspire others.
