The story of 3 Doors is aimed at primary school and pre-teen children, so who better to review the book than a child within that age range? My twelve year old son thoroughly enjoyed 3 Doors and said it would not have been the type of book he would have normally chosen to read, so was pleased to have had the opportunity to do this, and offer his opinions.

What did he think? Here is a young boy’s perspective:

“A book in a book, 3 Doors is about a group of children who find a strange bookshop in the middle of a ghost town, in which they are taken inside a book. Occasionally they have to make a choice between 3 doors, each with a different path through the story. If they choose the wrong door, they are trapped within the book forever.

The good thing about this book is the fact that the plot is not repetitive, for example, the number of times when the children have to choose between the doors is not overused. I think this book is suited to children of the age’s eight to twelve and is a fantasy adventure.

The idea behind the book is original, but similar to fairytales in that it uses the concept of being able to go inside a book. However, there is a twist, which is the existence of the 3 doors, and the fear of being trapped if the wrong door is chosen.

I really liked this book, and would recommend it to the age group suggested.”

So there you have it, straight from the horse’s mouth! As my son – an avid Terry Pratchett and Garth Nix fan - is very choosy about his reading materials, that fact that he enjoyed this book (which was different from his usual literary selections), says a lot about it.
