Author: Margaret Mears, M.D.

ISBN:  978-1-4327-2480-1

Dr. Margaret Mears is a trained Internal Medicine Physician, who had been accepted into a Canadian medical school in 1971- an era when medical schools in Canada were mandated to accept a certain percentage of female applicants. While attending medical school, she learned, along with her fellow classmates, that over seventy percent of patients’ illnesses were not physical in nature. Mears, who was born in Canada, now lives in Arizona where she does hospice work and even makes house calls. She adopted her son as a single mom and is a cancer survivor. It was after 30 years of practicing medicine and observing her patients that she decided to return to her first love, writing.

Mears is the founder of “Write from your heart, ™” a creative writing workshop in which participants blossom as they discover the healing power of writing.

ABC's  of Lighthearted Living offers a profound message of hope for anyone struggling to find fulfillment in a challenging world. With the assistance of the talented illustrator, Kate Blue, Mears divides The ABC's of Lighthearted Living into separate sections each representing a letter in the alphabet.

Basically, the book is aimed at stressed and depressed individuals who are at a loss as to how to get out of their quagmire.

Mears has chosen some of her patient’s experiences as well as her own to illustrate her examples in order to assist each other along life’s path. You can choose to implement one or all of her recommendations.

Needless to say, life is full of difficulties, however, with this book in hand, written with compassion and wisdom, you will overcome them with a flourish.

Twenty-six alphabetically arranged proven principles will keep you laughing, inspired, confident and more connected to your inner feelings and to those around you.  And packed with moving stories taken from Mears’ own practice, you will learn how some of her own patients overcame seemingly insurmountable obstacles to achieve great joy.

Here are some examples as to why this book is filled with sage advice.

In “A” as for attitude, an upbeat outlook is primordial to stay healthy longer.

Like the “Little Engine That Could” your attitude is the key that takes you over the hills of life.

“B” is for balance. We must reach for the top of happiness and self-fulfillment.

“C” is for creativity. And how to unleash your creative self.

“D” is for allowing yourself to dream. Succinctly, throughout Dr. Mears’ alphabet you will find the treasures of positive thinking.

The one that caught my fancy is ‘L” for laughter, for it is as you know, the best medicine.

In the letter “Z”, Dr. Mears gives vent to her creative poetry:

Z is for zebra

My striped friend

I see you and wonder

Do your stripes ever end?   ….

And her role does not end there. She would love to hear from people with similar experiences or how her book has changed their attitudes.

On the whole, the ABC of Lighthearted Living… my Rx, is a well written, full of anecdotal evidence and is a testimony to the power of positive thinking.
