Publisher: Black and White Publishing

Grannies, don’t you just love them? It seems that whatever ailment befalls you, they have a cure. If you have a sore throat, they provide potions to soothe it, and if you can’t get that mark off your new top, they seem to be able to even if you can’t!

What are their secrets? Thankfully you won’t have to wait long to find out with the help   of Linda Gray’s new book, Granny’s Book of Good Old-fashioned Common Sense, that is packed full of “good old-fashioned common sense”.

Part One begins in the kitchen - a place of food and many dishes. The advice within this first section ranges from simple tips to what to do if you need to clean your saucepans. Gone will be your moaning when you’ve read how easy it is to clean away the grease and grime with the simple solution “Granny” provides. No more will you worry over all those mounds of clothes that need to be washed when you’ve read the advice in here. Really it is that simple but yet so effective.

“Granny” also dishes out wonderful tips for if you’ve ended up with leftover potatoes and don’t know what to do with them. Did you know you could make a family omelette from those unwanted spuds? Amazing stuff!

Pie and mash is a traditional English plate but somehow overtime it has been forgotten, with only a few locations in the East End of London still interested in keeping it going. Did you know that? This may not be what you’d call a handy piece of information but it is interesting.

What to do if you find a slug taking a nibble at your lettuces? The next part of “Granny’s” book will offer all you green-fingered gardeners yet more useful tips. Here we have a lot of interesting facts that can be so handy. For instance which plants work well as “good companions”. Potato teamed with beans or corn works, as do onions with carrots or beetroot. See, even our vegetables make friends with each other like you or I.

Household items such as paint trays or yoghurt pots can be recycled and used in your garden instead of thrown away to litter the land. Ice-lolly sticks have their uses - find out what they are and read on.

If you fancy a go at stitching or perhaps knitting a jumper, advice on this creative hobby is packed inside. I’m not personally a fan of knitting but I do know there are others out there who might like to give this one a try. Why not? “Granny” does know what she is talking about.

All in all a wonderful book with so many uses it is unbelievable. The delicate pictures featured inside are a lovely way to finish it off. I’m glad to have come across this useful gem.
