 Author: Gloria Gaither

Publishers:  Regal from Gospel Light

ISBN: 978-0-8307-4686-6

In the tradition of the psalmists, Gloria Gaither pours out her soul to the Lord in her latest publication, “A Book of Simple Prayers.” It is a book the author admits she never intended to write.

“I never started out to write prayers,” she states in the Author’s Note. “But there was a span of time when prayers came out whenever I began to write. I could not begin whatever project was before me until I cleared my mind of the prayer that was tumbling from my heart onto the page.”

These prayers were part of the author’s personal journey, treasures she returned to in private moments of reflection and contemplation, which she came to recognize as part of a much greater Story inspired by the One true Author.

Although the views and concerns addressed by Gaither are quite personal, they are also universal. In poetic language and style, she expresses what many of us have felt at various times in our lives. She also motivates us to articulate our own prayers through the written word, chronicling our calls to the Almighty and His response.

By sharing her beliefs, struggles and relationship with God, Gaither opens a window for her readers who will be reminded of their own circumstances and begin to pray accordingly. These prayers are deeply personal and remind us that our conversations with God do not have to be formulaic and recited by rote. If we speak to God from our hearts, we not only convey our deepest yearnings to Him, but also affirm them for our own self-awareness. Our relationship with both God and ourselves will be deepened and strengthened.

This collection of prayers is numbered 1 through 71 and may be read as a group from beginning to end, or sought out individually through the aid of the “Index of Titles and First Lines” and the “Topical Index” at the back of the book.

I found myself reading this book slowly, one prayer at a time, often in companion with a daily devotion. My meditation on the devotion was expanded to include one of these prayers and was made all the richer for it. It seemed to be appropriate since the prayers were written at similar moments in the author’s life; therefore, having a distinctly meditative quality.

‘A Book of Simple Prayers’ is an inspirational snapshot of the human author’s story while taking its place in the grander Story by the divine Author. I would encourage everyone who wants to deepen their relationship with God to add this collection to their library and use it to start their own journal of prayers.
