In his acknowledgments Dr Nathanson states ‘My patients inspired this book.’   On the pages of Ordinary Miracles Learning from Breast Cancer Survivors the reader is offered a glimpse into several Case Studies regarding detection of a lump, to diagnosis, fear for the future, treatment, recovery and life after cancer.  The steps for detection, diagnosis and various treatments of cancer are outlined in depth.

As Dr. Nathanson points out, early detection is a crucial factor in the ‘miracle’ of recovery from breast cancer.  Detection of a lump does not always mean breast cancer is present.  Diagnosis of cancer does not always mean instant death.  Diagnosis of cancer is not the result of detection rather it is the conclusion of the detection.  Upon receiving the diagnosis, Dr. Nathanson states more than one patient has voiced a whole gamut of qualms regarding their fear of death, fear of leaving their family friends, fear of surgery, and fear of treatment and possible disfigurement.

Nathanson discusses surgery which may or may not mean removal of the full breast.   Patients who are fully understanding of what options are available to them, what to expect and what may or may not be accomplished; express greater confidence in their doctors and in the procedures they undergo.

Dr. Nathanson indicates that he conducted interviews with male and female breast cancer patients before writing this book.  Even today there are those who don’t realize that men as well as women are at risk.

Ordinary Miracles Learning from Breast Cancer Survivors is a well written work filled with many vignettes provided through talking with a wide range of patients. Chapter headings provide the reader a clear understanding for what will be found in each chapter.  The book can be read from front to back, or the reader can pick and choose the topics most needed for the moment. The reader is reminded over and over that the human spirit is often strong even when the physical body may be at its weakest.

The book is highly recommended for patients, their family, therapists and those who simply need a positive hope filled read.

Dr. Nathanson states:  “The theme of human strength and resourcefulness in the face of the terrible fact of cancer is one that we have seen again and again.”  It is Dr. Nathanson’s belief that the miracle is not that recovery may take place, but rather that human strength remains strong even when death is eminent.
