Sarah Bilston is British but resides in Connecticut where she is an Assistant Professor of English Literature.

Having been prescribed bed rest for her first pregnancy, Sarah avoided it the second time round but brings her knowledge of that part of her life to this, her first work of fiction.

Bed Rest tells the charming tale of Quinn Boothroyd who is a successful English lawyer married to Tom and living in New York.

Six months pregnant she visits the doctor and is told she must spend three months in bed  or being on “bed rest” if you prefer.

This is certainly not what Quinn, or Q as she is called, expected - how can she cope just lying around all day with little to do but catch up on Ricki Lake shows and munch on home-made baklava pastry? Still if she doesn’t want the baby arriving three months early, she ought to follow doctors orders surely?

However as she rests she observes life going on around her and discovers that things are not all as they seem. For a start she questions is her career going in the right direction and just how big is the gap between her and Tom growing? With all the odds stacking against her, is it the right thing to do to bring a child into the world?

Q’s friend’s relationship with her husband is not all as rosy as it used to be and this can only spell disaster as her friend, Lara, is expecting too. What advice can Q offer to a friend in need and who is the mystery girl Lara’s husband is cheating on her with? The lover may be closer to home then Q thinks!

Toward the end of this fabulous novel you have a feeling of doubt over Q’s marriage - will it last? The answer is not what I thought.

This is a hugely enjoyable, witty chick-lit but without the usual clichés such as the ever devoted husband and perfect family life. I rather liked this side of things as it makes everything inside seem so much more realistic and not as fairy-tale like as many other reads. You are constantly amused throughout and the way in which it is written is easy to follow and keeps you captivated.

A perfect book to read while relaxing beside a pool or even during one of those rainy days where there is little to do. I enjoyed it so much and gobbled it up in one sitting. Fantastic, fun and full of wit.  A promising first novel.
