Author: Derek Adie Flower

Publisher: LuLu Press

ISBN: 978-1-4303-2599-4

Derek Flower was born in Geneva and raised in Alexandria. Flower received a cosmopolitan education at Italian, French and English schools in Egypt before attending Malvern College in England and completing his studies in Oxford where he received an honours degree. He lived for many years in the South of France before residing to Tuscany and then onto the historic Villa Borghese outside of Rome where he now lives with his wife.

As for myself,  I have never been a fan of tombs in the heart of Ancient Egypt but I thought I’d chance this mystical book which sounded appealing. Flower certainly has a way with words, building up an atmosphere of peculiar mystery mixed with history and politics.

This is the story of an archaeologist, Christopher Grant, who gains the possession of a property in Egypt. It is believed that in the grounds of this property is the lost tomb of Imhotep. Grant is in the midst of considering whether to make an announcement of his unearthing. Yet it seems that forces beyond his control are to prevent him from doing so and gaining the wide-spread recognition that would go with it.

Suddenly, quite unexpectedly, he dies.

Any suspicions over his death are resolved when Dr. Eweiss, a local physician, certifies Grant’s passing is due to a heart attack and perhaps a possible overdose?

Yet just when you think people may never suspect any foul play is at hand, Grant’s friend admits he never thought his deceased pal had any health problems. He later learns through a reporter that Grant had indeed found Imhotep's tomb. Is this the evidence he needs to know all is not as it should be?

He is now haunted by not only the death of his friend but also the other information he has found out. What has really gone on? Who is at fault?

Personally this book was not my type of read but the characters are well shaped and the way in which this author describes Egyptian tombs and the history of this land will fascinate enthusiasts of this topic.

We learn about Egyptian burial customs and the some-what gruesome operations that were performed that included cutting through the bodies of corpses in order to mummify them.

Politics is also closely woven into this tale as well as the secrets of the tombs.

This is what I’d call quite a fast paced novel with some depth into the Egyptian cosmology and murders.

If you’re the type of person who loves to read about all things Egyptian with a dash of history and drama, this could be the book for you.

If you are interested in a diatribe, with some humour thrown in, pertaining to many of the ills of the USA, then Michael Moore’s, Stupid White Men should satisfy your appetite.
