Being a big animal lover, I absolutely fell in love with the beginning of this novel. Lobsenz writes about a lovely half-shepherd, half-Labrador who belongs to the janitor of the building coming across the street for his “early morning tour”.

Jake Garrison observes this nearly every morning, so it seems, and this makes him think about how a tightrope does not lead to the centre of the universe but stretches across a sea of sulphuric acid and eventually drains into a dense, black hole. Language like this is interwoven throughout this novel like fine thread.  It also has a slight philosophical feel to it that will appeal to many.

This is the tale of Garrison, a man who learns lessons the hard way and in return has to give up his dream of becoming a writer to pursue a struggling typewriter company. All because of a man he believes to be having an affair with his wife.

One day, Garrison’s wife, Diane, reveals the news that should make him happy but instead evokes feelings of anger and hurt. She is pregnant - he decides he will not be fooled or tricked into thinking he is the father, after all suspicions are high she’s been having it off with this other man. Yet he is not going to tell her his fears and will remain quiet.

What can possibly happen in this kind of scenario although you already know something will eventually come out?

As if Garrison doesn’t have it bad enough, his father’s funeral arrangements need to be sorted. In the end the date is set for a Monday - the same day as chosen for President Kennedy.

The story also mentions famous names from the past that most of you will recognize.

The ending to this book is interesting and again the theory of the dense, black hole creeps up in conversation. Read this book to know what I am talking about and how it relates to  the big concept of life.

A well-written piece of literary work aimed at the male audience but as I’ve proved, women can read it and also enjoy it.

Set in the early 1960s, a time of many changes in the world.

Really happy to have come across this book and had the pleasure of reading it.
