G.L Sheerin is an information technology professional who will no doubt be eager to show his son the workings of computers when he grows up. Sheerin and his wife have scoured bookstores to look for computer-related children’s books but were unable to do so. So the idea arose to write Virus Games which introduces children to the world of computer science.

Sheerin was born in Midland Park, N.J in 1959. He is the son of a well-known advertising executive who is behind such slogans as “The first wonder drug…Bayer works wonders.”

He has earned a Bachelor of Science and has since worked with top U.S companies such as Walt Disney and IBM.

Sheerin has recently completed the second book of the Peter’s Packet series and can now be found writing the third.

Peter Dempsey loathes computers and avoids computer stores altogether. So he is not best pleased when his father decides to buy him and his “popular and pushy” older sister Jenny a computer from America Computers store.

Jenny is first to seize the one she wants which comes with 512 mega bites and a 1.8 Pentium processor. Judging by the gleeful look on the young salesman’s face, it is probably the most expensive of the lot.

Cracking jokes with Peter’s father, the salesman arranges for the computer to be loaded up into the back of his car - this pleasing Jenny no end. And this is only the start.

Peter is to begin his first computer course at school, PC 101. He dreads the very thought and just seeing all the neat little computers lined up in the classroom is enough to make him cower. He meets Professor Kinsley who he doesn’t trust and thinks creepy. Is this his new teacher?

One night disaster strikes which gives Peter the ability to see the inner-workings of his computer and also “packets” - read this book to find out what they really are.

Peter begins his mission to stop a computer virus caused by Terry William, a technical whiz kid. This virus threatens to wreak havoc worldwide. Can he  manage to save the world from this deadly threat in time?

A very interesting book that should appeal to the young audience and anyone who enjoys the internet. The plot is engrossing and characters likable. It is written in an open style which won’t prove too difficult for the younger generation to understand. If you have kids, they will enjoy this book.

It could have been better and perhaps made a bit more exciting but still deserves praise. Let the game begin!
