WOW - What a beginning to this novel, I couldn’t wait to read on.

Robert Sacks, a research chemist in a medical lab, walks home after work through a park enjoying a pleasant afternoon. Sitting on a park bench he rings a woman friend to try and arrange brunch and then makes his way back to his apartment. Nothing out of the ordinary there.  A nightmare follows.

The scene the next day in that same apartment is very different. What happened and why?      Some things cannot be explained.

Sergeant Mike Sams meets Dr Cary Blake who has worked with  the victim at the research department. He finds himself amazed at this Marilyn Monroe look-alike and falls in love. They are to work together on the murder of Robert Sacks.

In North Albany in New York Father Daniel was summoned to the Archdiocese to be informed of a dig taking place near Tivoli, Italy. Certain objects have been discovered relating to the Catholic Church - a scroll had been found and Father Daniel was asked to spend time deciphering it.

Robert Sacks body had been found to have mysterious marks and deformed retinas. Was it man or beast that caused this?

Another four victims turn up in quick succession. One of them, Jennie, who had recently applied to be in the sisterhood of the Catholic Church had survived a visit from the “thing”.

Father Daniel knew Cary had a Ph.D in Archival studies and could be a great help in unravelling the code“ gather that which cannot be had” was eventually deciphered and certain names were discovered. Were they to be the chosen ones?

Mystery and intrigue follow. Is it a demon or could it be Satan himself?

Mike Sams and Dr Cary get to together in their search for the solution to the terror that lurked in the night. The scroll was found not to be animal skin or papyrus - it was something more ghastly and written in the language of Enchian which is the language of Satan.

I didn’t really find this novel as fast paced as suggested on the book cover but it is a thriller with plenty of terror and suspense. In the second half the pace did pick up.

It has cliff hanger chapter endings and a bit of romance if you want to call it that, but for a debut novel, remember the name Jerry Bayne.

The title is brilliant it draws you into the book as does the fabulous cover. Read this and enjoy but remember to keep the door locked, although sometimes this is of no avail so just keep the light on and your eyes shut tight!

I won’t tell you anymore and spoil it for you but it is gripping stuff. It would make an excellent horror film.

Fabulous!
